Tampa Police have arrested a suspect in connection with an August hit-and-run incident that left a bicyclist seriously injured. The investigation began on August 27, 2025, after reports that a silver SUV struck a man riding his bicycle on Dale Mabry Highway near Mango Avenue. The victim, described as an adult white male in his late 40s, was taken to a hospital for treatment of critical injuries and has since been released.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene following the crash. Police later identified the suspect as Derrick Bass, age 33, who was operating a silver 2019 Chevy Equinox. The vehicle was found abandoned in the 2200 block of E. 12th Avenue and impounded as evidence.
Detectives collected evidence and developed leads that led to Bass being identified as the driver at the time of the incident. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
On September 8, deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office located and arrested Bass at 7402 N 56th Street without incident. He was transported to Orient Road Jail and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Serious Bodily Injury and Driving While License Canceled, Suspended or Revoked (Death or Serious Bodily Injury). He also faces two counts for Violation of Probation.
“Hopefully, this will arrest will provide the man left injured with a sense of justice,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “Thanks to outstanding and dedicated investigative skills combined with the strong partnership we have with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect in this case will be held accountable.”
