The U.S. Census Bureau has released three new tables detailing the 2025 Government Organization counts. The data include breakdowns by government type, state, population size, group, and function. Information on school systems is also included, with distinctions made between independent and dependent districts.
The release features three main tables: Government Units by State, Local Governments by Type and State, and Special District Governments by Function and State. Additionally, the Organization Public Use File for State and Local Government Structures provides a comprehensive database of U.S. state and local governments as well as their major agencies.
These counts are part of the Census of Governments series, which collects data on state and local governments every five years in years ending in “2” and “7.” According to the Census Bureau: “The Organization Component of the Census of Governments provides the official count of active U.S. governments.” The agency also announced that select tables from this series will now be published annually in addition to the standard product series.
The Government Organization tables can be accessed at www.census.gov/topics/public-sector/government-organization/data/tables.html. The Organization Public Use Files are available at www.census.gov/programs-surveys/gus/data/datasets.html.
No separate news release accompanies this data; it is being provided as a tip sheet.
