The Florida Department of Health has introduced the Florida Health Care Innovation Loan Program, which will provide $50 million annually to support new health care solutions in the state. The program is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving the quality and delivery of health care services.
The Health Care Innovation Council, chaired by Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, brings together members with backgrounds in health care, technology, finance, and patient advocacy. “The launch of the Health Care Innovation Revolving Loan program represents yet another significant step in Florida’s efforts to foster a culture of innovation within Florida’s health care community,” said Lt. Governor Jay Collins. “As the Council Chair and newest member, I am honored to work with the Council to support health care innovation implementing solutions that address the evolving needs of our state’s health care system.”
State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo commented on the purpose of the loan program: “This loan program reflects Florida’s commitment to patient-centered innovation and medical choice. We are investing in the lives of Floridians by supporting solutions that improve care delivery and outcomes.”
The council aims to encourage technologies and service models that increase efficiency in health care delivery across Florida. The objectives include reducing strain on workers, expanding access, improving patient results, limiting unnecessary emergency department visits, and lowering costs for both patients and the state while maintaining quality.
A new website, Innovation.flhealth.gov, will serve as an information resource for stakeholders such as providers, entrepreneurs, technology developers, and others interested in participating. The application portal (https://healthcareinnovationloan.floridahealth.gov/LAP) has also been launched to streamline applications for eligible organizations seeking funding for innovative projects.
Entities eligible for loans include those licensed or certified by the Agency for Health Care Administration—such as hospitals, residential treatment facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, nursing homes, assisted living facilities—as well as organizations providing educational or clinical training in partnership with these facilities.
The Department of Health is nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board and works through statewide efforts to protect and improve public health. More details about their initiatives can be found at www.FloridaHealth.gov.
The statutory basis for this initiative is section 381.4015 of Florida Statutes.
