Florida Department of Health prepares special needs shelters ahead of Hurricane Milton

In preparation for Hurricane Milton, the Florida Department of Health has announced that special needs shelters are ready to open in areas expected to be affected by the storm.

The department is encouraging residents who may require additional assistance during emergencies to register with the Florida Special Needs Registry. According to the announcement, “Registering through the Florida Special Needs Registry allows local emergency management officials to provide important information and quickly assist you during an emergency. For more information, contact your county’s emergency management office or visit the Florida Special Needs Registry.”

Individuals eligible for special needs shelters are advised to bring a kit containing essential items such as a list of medications and dosages, a 30-day supply of medications, necessary medical equipment—especially for those dependent on electricity or oxygen—and backup energy sources. The kit should also include any special dietary foods and personal information like photo identification, insurance cards, emergency contacts, and primary care provider details.

After registration with the Florida Special Needs Registry is complete, local emergency management agencies will provide further guidance about evacuation procedures and shelter options.

Health care providers seeking access to the registry’s provider functions are instructed to email SNR@flhealth.gov for login credentials.
