Florida Medical Association announces recipients of 2025 annual awards

Michael Patete, MD, an otolaryngologist from Venice, has been honored with the Award of Distinguished Service at the 2025 Florida Medical Association (FMA) Annual Meeting. Dr. Patete has spent more than three decades in private practice and is recognized for his work on behalf of both physicians and patients. He previously served as the FMA’s 144th President from 2020 to 2021 and has held leadership roles including Past President of the FMA PAC, Sarasota County Medical Society, and SCMS PAC.

The Harold S. Strasser, MD Good Samaritan Award was presented to Diana Twiggs, MD, a family medicine physician based in Fernandina Beach. Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Dr. Twiggs has traveled several times to Poland and Ukraine to deliver humanitarian aid and supplies. She also advocates for volunteerism and fundraising efforts related to these missions. Dr. Twiggs works with Baptist Health Emergency Resources Group and is a Past President of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians.

Joshua Lenchus, DO, received the Gerald L. Schiebler, MD Advocate for Medical Students Award for his ongoing mentorship and advocacy on behalf of medical students. “Dr. Lenchus, who served as the FMA’s 146th President from 2022 to 2023, has consistently demonstrated a willingness to understand medical students’ unique concerns and struggles, making him an invaluable mentor and advocate.” Currently he serves as Medical Director for Aetna’s Florida market in the southeast region.

Angeli Maun Akey, MD was also recognized during the event. She is known for her roles as founding medical director of North Florida Integrative Medicine and founder or co-founder of multiple other organizations focused on integrative care and preventive medicine. She is also co-editor of a textbook that received recognition from the British Medical Association in 2021.

Madeline Joseph, MD, specializing in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine in Jacksonville, was acknowledged at the meeting as well.
