The Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) is encouraging residents to focus on energy conservation during National Energy Awareness Month in October. The FPSC notes that reducing energy use can help lower utility bills and give consumers more control over their household expenses.
“Energy Awareness Month highlights the power of making smart energy choices,” said FPSC Chairman Mike La Rosa. “When consumers take simple steps to conserve energy, they not only lower their monthly utility bills but also gain more control over their household costs.”
Florida ranks as the second-largest producer of electricity in the United States, following Texas, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. In 2023, residential customers were responsible for 54% of the state’s electricity consumption, which is the highest residential share among all states. This high usage is largely due to widespread use of air conditioning and electric heating systems.
The FPSC urges Floridians to treat Energy Awareness Month as a starting point for ongoing efforts to use energy wisely throughout the year. The commission emphasizes that consistent smart energy choices can lead to lower costs and contribute to a more reliable and affordable energy future for everyone in Florida.
