IAM members Richard Turner and Melissa McRonney-Apaw were among 20 participants in the recent Leadership II class at the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ (IAM) Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. Both Turner and McRonney-Apaw serve as union representatives and educators in their respective locals.
The week-long training focused on understanding legislative processes, with an emphasis on effective advocacy for workers’ rights in Washington, D.C. The program highlighted the importance of lobbying efforts by unions, noting that companies are consistently active in lobbying for their interests, making it necessary for union members to engage similarly on behalf of labor issues.
Participants also explored ethical considerations within union leadership, strategies for protecting members, and ways to strengthen solidarity. The training was described as both empowering and unifying, providing attendees with tools to become more effective leaders within their organizations.
