The Joe Abrahams Fitness Center has reopened to the public after an 11-month restoration following significant hurricane damage. The center, which offers views of Bayshore and downtown Tampa, is one of several Parks and Recreation facilities that required repairs after the storm.
“This marks two of the most-anticipated post-storm celebrations for our residents,” Mayor Jane Castor said. “This gorgeous fitness facility with views of Bayshore and downtown is a special place to work out and socialize. And the splash pad brings so much joy to our kids.”
Repairs at the fitness center totaled nearly $1.9 million, including $1.5 million for building repairs and $368,000 for new equipment. These expenses are part of more than $35 million in damages across city-wide Parks & Recreation facilities caused by the hurricane.
About four feet of storm surge flooded the building, destroying items such as drywall, desks, internal doors, and all fitness equipment. Restoration efforts included rewiring electrical systems, replacing air conditioning units, installing new flooring in the exercise room, and adding a new roof.
“It has been a long wait, but the end result will make people happy,” Parks and Recreation Manager Ted Fowler said. “New, top-end equipment, new air conditioning and new floors have set Joe Abrahams up to be the best it ever has been.”
Memberships at Joe Abrahams Fitness Center cost $15 per month or $150 annually; drop-in visits are available for $4. Classes offered include High-Intensity Interval Training, Zumba, Chair Yoga, Core Essentials, Fit & Flexible, Line Dancing, and Fit, Fun, Fab!
Originally known as Ballast Point Fitness and Wellness Center, it was renamed in March 2002 by then-Mayor Dick Greco in honor of Joe Abrahams—who served as director of Parks and Recreation for 24 years before his passing at age 71.
