Mississippi sees decline in job openings for June as hiring slows

Mississippi reported 64,000 job openings in June 2025, down from 68,000 in May, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate for the state was 5.1 percent in June, compared to 5.4 percent the previous month. Nationally, the job openings rate stood at 4.4 percent in June and 4.6 percent in May.

Regional Commissioner Victoria G. Lee commented on the figures: “The job openings rate in Mississippi was 5.1 percent in June and 5.4 percent in the previous month.”

The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in Mississippi was measured at 0.8 for June, indicating fewer unemployed individuals than available jobs. In comparison, the national ratio was slightly higher at 0.9 unemployed persons per job opening during that period.

Across the country, a total of 25 states and the District of Columbia had lower ratios than the national average, while 18 states had higher ratios and seven matched it.

Mississippi saw a slight decrease in hiring activity with 41,000 hires recorded in June versus 42,000 hires in May. Separations also increased marginally to 40,000 from May’s total of 39,000 separations.

Over the year ending in June, monthly averages for Mississippi were calculated at 44,000 hires and 43,000 separations.

Regarding types of separations within Mississippi for June: there were approximately 27,000 quits and about 11,000 layoffs or discharges—up slightly from May’s numbers of around 26,000 quits and roughly10,000 layoffs or discharges.

Quits averaged about 28,000 per month over the past year with a range between24 ,000and32 ,000 . Layoffs and discharges averaged13 ,000per month during this time frame , ranging from10 ,00to18 ,00 .

The next release of State Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates is scheduled for September17 ,2025 .
