Shalimar Beach Resort will reopen on Sanibel Island on September 28, 2025, marking three years since Hurricane Ian made landfall. The resort was destroyed by the hurricane in 2022 and has been rebuilt entirely, becoming the first hotel constructed on the island in over four decades.
The new Shalimar Beach Resort offers 33 accommodations, including private one- and two-bedroom villas with direct Gulf views and hotel studios with partial water views. Additional amenities include a beachfront saltwater pool that is heated year-round, a rooftop terrace with sunrise and sunset views, fully equipped kitchens, private screened lanais in every unit, and 360 feet of private white-sand beach. There are also community BBQ and picnic areas as well as on-site rentals for bikes, paddle boards, and cabanas.
The resort’s owners have deep ties to Sanibel Island. They are part of the fourth generation managing the family-owned business and were married on the property’s beach. Their motivation to rebuild was driven by a desire to allow future generations to enjoy what Shalimar has offered since it opened in 1959.
“Hurricane Ian tested us in every possible way, but it also clarified our purpose,” says Shalimar’s owner, Sean Niesel. “Shalimar’s rebuild isn’t just about what we lost, but what we’ve gained: strength, perspective, and a renewed commitment to hospitality. As Sanibel Island visitors since 1990, we take great pride in being part of the island’s future for generations to come.”
The reopening is seen as an important step in Sanibel Island’s recovery from Hurricane Ian. Shalimar Beach Resort aims to welcome back returning guests while inviting new visitors to experience its offerings.
