The City of Tampa has announced the acquisition of its second new paving machine, a Caterpillar AP1055. This purchase is intended to help city crews pave more streets efficiently and at a lower cost compared to hiring external contractors.

According to the city, approximately 50 lane miles have been paved so far this year in neighborhoods such as Port Tampa, Oak Park, Virginia Park, Ballast Point, and Palma Ceia Pines. This marks an increase of over 35% compared to the same period last year and more than 50% higher than in 2023.

The new equipment is described as quieter and easier to operate than previous models and can pave up to 25 feet wide in one pass. The addition allows the city to retire its oldest paver truck, which was over 15 years old.

City officials noted that the increased focus on paving also enables potential roadway safety improvements like bike lanes, on-street parking, and better drainage where necessary.

Since Mayor Castor took office in 2019, Tampa has repaved 275 lane-miles of streets. The city’s paving budget for fiscal year 2026 will rise significantly to about $41 million due in part to rollover funds and $21.1 million from All For Transportation funds.

“Since Mayor Castor took office in 2019, 275 lane-miles of Tampa’s streets have been repaved, with many more on the way. In fact, in FY26, the City’s paving budget will increase significantly to about $41 million, thanks largely to rollover funds and $21.1 million in All For Transportation funds.”
