Tampa and its sister city Barranquilla, Colombia, will mark 60 years of partnership with an official celebration on Sunday, September 7. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and will feature Mayor Jane Castor launching the anniversary observance. The milestone highlights six decades of cultural exchange and friendship between the two cities.

The upcoming celebration will also serve as the start of a year-long series of events planned for 2026. These events aim to showcase the history and achievements of the Tampa-Barranquilla relationship while promoting future opportunities for collaboration in culture and trade. Organizers intend to highlight Barranquilla’s traditions, encourage bilateral trade, and build connections between business communities in both cities.

“It’s an incredible honor to celebrate 60 years of sisterhood between Tampa and Barranquilla—our city’s oldest and most vibrant international partnership,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “This milestone reflects decades of meaningful exchanges in culture, education, and commerce, and I couldn’t be more excited about the future we’re building together. I look forward to strengthening this bond even further—with a visit to Barranquilla on the horizon and a shared commitment to the next 60 years of friendship and opportunity.”

Tampa has maintained its sister city relationship with Barranquilla since 1966, making it Tampa’s longest-standing international partnership. Sister Cities International was founded in 1956 with goals that include bringing people from different cultures together, fostering mutual understanding, and promoting peace.

“This milestone isn’t just a celebration of the past—it’s a springboard for future collaboration in culture, commerce, and diplomacy,” said Alfred Goldberg, President of Tampa Sister Cities. “We’re committed to honoring 60 years of partnership while laying the groundwork for an equally impactful future.”

Media attending Sunday’s event will have access to interviews with Mayor Castor as well as delegates from Barranquilla regarding Tampa’s international partnerships and upcoming initiatives set for next year.
