The City of Tampa has secured new grant funding to extend its Green Team program for another three years, with plans to double the number of participants compared to the previous group.
On September 8, a new class of Green Team members began training following a formal swearing-in ceremony at the City Center at Hanna Avenue. The previous cohort, consisting of nine members, completed their service on July 31, 2025. Over the past year, these members planted 375 trees and more than 9,400 plants, removed over 49,000 pounds of litter and debris from city parks and waterways, educated more than 4,500 residents and youth about environmental stewardship, earned professional certifications such as the Urban Agriculture Specialist Certification, and supported city initiatives including hurricane response efforts after Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024.
“Programs like this are at the heart of our mission of Transforming Tampa’s Tomorrow,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “This young team is building workforce skills while helping to restore our environment, engaging with residents about ways to protect it, and strengthening our city’s resilience for years to come.”
With 19 new members starting this week, the Green Team will continue offering hands-on learning opportunities while making an impact across Tampa. The program’s funding comes from an AmeriCorps grant administered by Volunteer Florida.
