Homeowners and contractors in Tampa now have access to a new virtual inspections process launched by the City of Tampa’s Development and Growth Management team. As of October 20, 2025, the city is offering building inspections through VuSpex, a digital tool designed to streamline the inspection process.

With VuSpex, users can choose between two options depending on their permit type. The first option allows for an “offline field report,” where photos and videos are taken using the app and later reviewed by an inspector. The second option involves scheduling a live, virtual inspection via video call, during which an inspector guides the user through the inspection remotely.

Both methods automatically generate inspection results within the city’s Accela permitting system, eliminating the need for separate scheduling in Accela.

JC Hudgison, Chief Building Official for the City of Tampa, said: “Virtual inspections are a game-changer for how we serve Tampa’s residents and contractors. On average, we perform 124 inspections for trade permits daily, so by embracing tools like VuSpex, we’re making inspections faster, more convenient, and more accessible. This is about meeting people where they are, reducing wait times, and using technology to improve the way we build Tampa together.”

Currently, not all types of inspections qualify for this service. Virtual inspections are available specifically for trade permits such as Building, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Roof Inspections.

For further information or questions regarding eligibility or usage of VuSpex for virtual inspections in Tampa, residents can contact the city at (813) 274-8211 or visit their office at 306 East Jackson Street.
