Tampa Police, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Apprehension Unit, have arrested Joshua Roelofs, 36, who was wanted after failing to appear in court on charges that included two counts of DUI Manslaughter.
Chief Lee Bercaw commented on the arrest: “This arrest is a significant step toward justice for the victims of the fatal crash, which tragically claimed the lives of two individuals. The apprehension also sends a clear and resounding message that the Tampa Police Department will tirelessly pursue justice, no matter how far a fugitive runs. This outcome is a testament to the dedication of our investigators and the power of strong law enforcement partnerships.”
After Roelofs missed his court date, police launched an investigation and discovered he had left the United States for Colombia. Investigators tracked him to Antioquia, Colombia, at the Finca Rivendell Paradise Girardota hotel. On August 11, information from the U.S. Marshals Task Force enabled Colombian authorities to locate and arrest Roelofs without incident.
Colombian officials escorted Roelofs back to Miami International Airport on August 19, where Tampa Police officers took custody of him before transferring him to Orient Road Jail. He is being held without bond.
