The Tampa Police Department is investigating the death of a suspect that occurred near N Ashley Drive and E Whiting Street shortly after 8:00 p.m. on October 7, 2025.

According to police, an adult male suspect was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation. While officers were speaking with him, the suspect, who was still handcuffed, broke away from officers and ran from the scene on foot. During the pursuit, an officer used a taser, and the suspect fell into the road in front of oncoming traffic. A vehicle then struck the suspect, resulting in his death at the scene.

The driver involved remained at the location and is cooperating with authorities. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will lead the investigation into the in-custody death, while the Tampa Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit will handle the crash investigation. An internal review will also be conducted to determine if department policies and procedures were followed.

N Ashley Drive between E Jackson Street and E Whiting Street has been closed to allow for investigative work. The case remains active, and updates will be released as available.
