The City of Tampa has opened applications for residents to join a board that will advise on the restoration and rehabilitation of the historic Sanchez y Haya Building and its surrounding area. The board, known as the Community Benefits Advisory Council (CBAC), will provide input to the Mayor and other city officials on how to carry out the development project.
The CBAC was established following City Council’s approval of the Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) program in 2023. This program requires developers who receive public funding for their projects to offer benefits to the community, with guidance from the advisory council.
Currently, four “Ad Hoc” CBAC members are being sought from residents living within half a mile of the Sanchez y Haya Building. These members will help negotiate agreements between developers and the community to ensure that local needs are addressed and that tangible benefits result from the project.
The Sanchez y Haya Building, constructed in 1910, is recognized as Tampa’s first reinforced concrete structure and once served as a commercial center for Ybor City and East Tampa. The planned renovation includes preserving its historic features, adapting it for new uses, and improving nearby public spaces such as streetscapes and infrastructure. The city aims for these efforts to revitalize an important historic site while boosting Ybor City’s cultural and economic life.
“The Mayor and City Council will each appoint two Ad-Hoc members per project,” according to information provided by city officials. “Ad Hoc members serve until the project is approved by the City Council or withdrawn, about a six to nine-month commitment.”
As stated in official guidelines: “As a project-specific member, you must live within half a mile of the project.”
Residents interested in applying can check if they meet the location requirement through an online tool provided by the city. Applications are due by Friday, November 21.
For more details about eligibility or how to apply, residents can contact city offices at 306 East Jackson Street or call (813) 274-8211.
