The Tampa Water Department is offering free compost to help residents maintain their lawns while conserving water during the dry fall season. Beginning Friday, November 7, 2025, at 9 a.m., customers of the City of Tampa Water Department can collect up to 30 gallons of compost at Alfred “Al” Barnes Park, located at 3100 E. 18th Avenue in Tampa. The event will continue through Saturday, November 8, or until supplies are depleted. Residents must register for the giveaway at tampa.gov/FallCompostGiveaway.
The department recommends that homeowners use the compost to topdress their lawns by aerating the soil and applying a thin layer of compost over the grass. This method is intended to improve soil health and moisture retention while reducing overall water usage. According to guidance from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, soils with higher organic matter content are better able to absorb water and provide it to plants during dry periods.
This initiative follows a summer with lower-than-average rainfall in the region. Data from Tampa Bay Water shows that there is currently an annual average rainfall deficit of 11.3 inches across the area. In response, once-a-week watering restrictions remain in effect within the City of Tampa.
“Tampa residents are always looking for ways to keep their lawns healthy while being water-wise,” said Sarah Burns, Water Planning Manager for the Tampa Water Department. “Using compost is a simple, natural way to strengthen soil and reduce water use year-round.”
