The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2023 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), offering updated measures of business activity in the United States. The BDS dataset includes information on job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns. These statistics cover the overall economy and are also organized by various establishment and firm characteristics.

The BDS is an annual series that now spans from 1978 through 2023. Data can be accessed through the BDS website, the Census API, and the BDS Explorer tool. The BDS Explorer allows users to view data using line charts, bar charts, thematic maps, and dashboards designed for comparison and organization of business dynamics measures.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau: “The data provide measures of business dynamics, such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns for the economy overall and aggregated by establishment and firm characteristics.”

For additional details or to explore the data, users are directed to visit BDS or use the BDS Explorer application.
