The U.S. Census Bureau has released preliminary data from the 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances. The early figures provide an initial overview of public school spending per student for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as state-level summaries of revenues and expenditures for the 2024 fiscal year.

The Census Bureau noted that fiscal years can differ among school systems, and the survey data are not adjusted to standardize these time frames across all districts.

According to the announcement, “The preliminary data are subject to change before the final release. The Census Bureau plans to release the final FY 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2026.”

This release serves as a tip sheet only, with no accompanying news release.
